The container truck rental rates are planned to increase, according to the Myanmar Container Truck Association (MCTA). Due to rising costs related to vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and other truck-related expenses, truck owners are facing financial difficulties. As a result, they are considering raising rental fees to offset these increased costs, said U Myo Htut Aung, spokesperson of the MCTA.
Currently, negotiations are still ongoing with partner organizations and relevant authorities regarding the proposed increase in truck rental fees, so an exact timeline cannot be confirmed yet, said U Myo Thut Aung. Due to the rising operational costs, many container truck owners are struggling to break even, leading some to shift to other businesses. As a result, the number of association-registered trucks has declined, and there has been a reduced influx of new container trucks into the market, according to container owners. As a result, this shortage has made it difficult to meet the demand for trucks from import-export businesses. Additionally, challenges such as driver shortages and traffic congestion at ports have led to delays.
U Myo Htut Aung explained that they are negotiating with relevant organizations to find solutions to these difficulties. Currently, the MCTA has about 2,000 member vehicles and about 2,000 non-member container trucks. The MCTA has set fixed rental rates for container trucks transporting goods from Yangon ports to destinations within Yangon Region and Bago Region. For other regions, rental fees will be negotiated and charged based on the specific circumstances of each trip.
