STORY: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva urged the defense of democracy in Latin America on Tuesday (July 9) following a recent coup attempt in Bolivia.
At the end of June, a Bolivian general led a failed coup against the Luis Arce government.
Lula emphasized the importance of regional solidarity and overcoming differences in democratic forces to prevent the advance of right-wing extremist groups.
Lula was welcomed on Tuesday (July 9) in Bolivia by his counterpart, Arce, during a state visit.
Brazilian president also said Lula on Tuesday that he hopes to welcome Venezuela back into Mercosur “soon.”
In a joint statement, Bolivian President Luis Arce cited discussions on strengthening partnerships between the two countries focused on energy and fertilizers.
