The earthquake-damaged religious buildings in the Sri Kshetra Cultural Zone, a World Heritage Site in Pyay Township, Bago Region, will be restored without losing their original features, according to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Sri Ksetra Branch).
The Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28 caused cracks in the Bawbawgyi Pagoda and the Lay Myethna Pagoda in the Sri Ksetra Cultural Zone. Although the pagodas in the Sri Ksetra Cultural Zone are not very tall, the Lay Myethna Pagoda is in a state of concern because it has been weak for a long time, said an official of the department. Three ancient Pyu cities in Myanmar, Hanlin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra, were designated as World Heritage Sites in June 2014.

The Mandalay earthquake caused damage to 6,779 ancient and religious buildings including pagodas, monasteries, temples, shrines and city walls in the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, Mandalay, Sagaing and Bago regions and Shan State, according to the released statements.
