The 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay was caused by the Sagaing Fault, Dr Yin Myo Min Htwe, deputy director of the Earthquake Division of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, told One News.
The epicentre of the very strong earthquake that struck at 12:51 pm on March 28, Myanmar time was located about 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay and about 21 kilometers northeast of the Mandalay Seismological Centre.
The earthquake was caused by the Sagaing Fault. As there may be further aftershocks, the public needs to be alert, Dr. Yin Myo Min Htwe said. (Interview) After a very strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, the damage can be extensive depending on the quality of buildings and the type of soil in the area where the buildings are located.
The very strong earthquake caused extensive damage across Myanmar with people being trapped in collapsed buildings and structures, and deaths, according to local reports.
