Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) founders and investors will be treated in accordance with the Myanmar Special Economic Zone law, rules and regulations, said Chairman of Central Task Force for Myanmar Special Economic Zone Union Minister for Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr. Kan Zaw.
He emphasized it at the meeting of the Central Task Force for Myanmar Special Economic Zone held in Nay Pyi Taw on January 14. The Union Minister explained about the termination of 8 agreements with initially permitted 6 companies for the Dawei Special Economic Zone and the situations to continue the project dealing with the new investors. He also urged to follow the security instructions because of extraordinary situations occurring frequently in the zone.
As the Dawei Special Economic Zone has the potential to be an important zone in Southeast Asia, matters relating to carrying out of implementation process without losing momentum, inviting the investors and encouraging and attracting the domestic and foreign investors were discussed.
A Italian-Thai company was permitted to implement the Dawei Special Economic Zone in 2008 and terminated because of weak implementation of Italian-Thai side in 2013. When the tender for initial project was offered, Italian-Thai company won the tender again in 2015. Then, the whole main project was started to implement led by the Government in 2019. The tender agreement with the Italian-Thai company was cancelled in January 2021.
