Negotiation is being made with other countries to sign contracts for the remaining three iron smelters at No. 2 Steel Plant (Pinpet) in Taunggyi Township, Shan State (South) to produce pig iron, U Min Thu, director-general of No. 1 Heavy Industrial Enterprise, Ministry of Industry of the Union of Myanmar said.
Currently, No. 2 Steel Plant (Pinpat) has 22 sub-workshops including the iron smelter, and 19 of the workshops were put into trial operation on January 21, 2023. If all 22 sub-workshops including the iron smelters are operational and are able to produce the pig iron, the produced pig iron will be sent to No. 1 Steel Plant (Myingyan). Then, through this, steel bars will be produced and half of it will be supplied to domestic industrial zones, he said.
No. 2 Steel Plant (Pinpat) produces over 70 million tons of iron ore and is capable of producing 200,000 tons of iron per year. Currently, for technical support, foreign and Myanmar experts are working together in checking and testing the machines and doing maintenance to continue the production.
