Effective action will be taken against drivers who disable YPS card readers installed on YBS buses operating in Yangon Region, U Lyan Cin Mang, Yangon Region Public Transport (YRTC) said.
Despite repeated inspections and warnings, such action is to be taken because of the increasing number of complaints from passengers and drivers’ rude behavior in relationship with passengers, U Lyan Cin Mang said.Mostly, in the rush hours, they turn off the fuse of the YPS card reader, put plastic bags on it, close the cash box with corks and turn off the CCTV camera to collect the fare themselves, he said.
Therefore, effective action will be taken against those, who disable YPS card readers, through checking whether the card readers are active online, U Lyan Cin Mang added. The Yangon Payment Service (YPS) card system was launched in 2020 to eliminate the problems of small change in cash and conductors’ collecting cash when paying for bus fares. Currently, there are over 230,000 YPS card users and around 450,000 cards in circulation.
There are 131 YBS bus lines operating in Yangon Region. Of them, about 4,000 vehicles of 98 bus lines have already been installed with YPS card readers. Buses of the rest will be equipped with them.
