Two pagodas in the Bagan Ancient Cultural Zone in NyangU Township, Mandalay Region, collapsed on September 12 due to heavy rains according to a post on social media platform page of U Ze Myo Lin, who is an archeology expert.
The collapsed pagodas are Pagoda No. 1042 in the zone and the Zedigyi Pagoda on Hgnet Pyit Taung. It is said that Pagoda No. 1042 is a long brick building built in the 13th century and the Zedigyi Pagoda built in the 12th century.
It is written in the archeology expert’s post that waterlogged signs were found in the collapse of those two ancient pagodas.
The other reasons for the collapse were high rate of water vapor content in the atmosphere, not having enough sunlight and heat, being unable to evaporate the water vapor inside the brickwork, no adhesion of earth cement, and being unable to control the rain. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced that there was a new rainfall record of 8.51 inches in NyaungU Township on September 12.
